Eight years ago, with backing from USFWS, Mapilanga, warden of the Okapi Reserve, did a bushmeat study in the markets of Beni and surrounding villages. Then, already, it was squirrels and porcupines that were hunted in the hills outside the park. "Real" meat came from the east -- the Park. The same phenomenon in TL2 where hunting occurs farther and farther from the big market towns. I am certain that a difference CAN be made...but with a lot of publicity and increased patrolling.

One discouraging line from the BBC report:

“Okapi meat, reportedly from the park, is now regularly on sale in the nearby town of Beni.”
